Pair of Hand-Forged 1930s Iron Gates With Winged Griffins

$4,500.00

Product Code: NG37-RW / Print This Product

A rare pair of hand-forged iron interior gates salvaged from the historic Windsor House—also known as the Castle Above the Clouds—on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. These gates originally divided the foyer from the living area, creating an elegant architectural threshold within the home’s richly appointed Spanish Revival interior.

Each gate features a beautifully crafted winged griffin at the crest—mythical guardians symbolizing vigilance, protection, and strength. The griffins face one another in a heraldic arrangement, their wings outstretched and bodies integrated into a sweeping composition of scrolls and curved iron lines. This motif is exceptionally unusual in residential ironwork and reflects the high level of custom craftsmanship commissioned for the Scholze family home in the early 1930s.

Additional details include:

• Graceful arched upper profiles with curled finials

• Twisted and scrolled vertical bars, typical of 1920s–30s artisan wrought-iron shops

• Decorative openwork panels with rhythmic botanical and foliate forms

• Lower band of acanthus-patterned iron tiles, echoing the home’s larger decorative program

• Original period blackened finish with beautiful patina

• Matching hardware elements, including latch and hinge mounts

This gate pair is in good antique condition, and measures approx. 44″ wide by 74″ tall and projects 5″. This piece requires a custom shipping quote; please contact us if you have any questions.
