Massive Antique 29-Light Gothic Revival Iron & Bronze Lantern, 19th Century

Out of stock

This is a colossal 29-light iron and bronze Gothic Revival lantern, dating from the 19th Century. The magnificent chandelier body begins with a substantial ring, rising out of a cluster of acanthus leaves. Substantial iron bands come down to form the octagonal lantern of the chandelier body. The sides of the lantern are formed by ripple glass panels, finished with an arch across the top of each panel. Each arch is crowned with a beautifully cast cluster of bronze laurel leaves, flanked by smaller acanthus clusters. A splendid, cast bronze quatrefoil with acanthus accents, attached to the top of the arch with a V shape, divides each arch into a pair of smaller Gothic arches. The lower edge of the lantern is adorned with a pattern of cast bronze trefoils. The chandelier arms extend upward from the base of the lantern, each joined by a horizontal bar extending from the side of the lantern, accented with a quatrefoil. Each arm supports three bobeches with candles of graduated height. Inside the lantern are four lights, pointing down to a fifth light with a splendid, cast bronze laurel leaf detailed shade holder and a large milk glass shade with scalloped edges (pictured). The chandelier features a remarkable, large canopy with amazing foliate detail, measuring 10 ½” in diameter. This light fixture is in excellent condition with a lovely patina, and the glass is also in excellent condition with no cracks or breaks, just the expected fleabites around the edges. The chandelier has been professionally rewired and comes with all the necessary attachments for modern installation. It measures approx. 31” wide, 45” tall (body only), and approx. 13’ 9” long overall.
