Description
This is a wonderful carved quarter-sawn “tiger” oak antique boxed newel post, dating to the beginning of the 1900’s. It begins with a very large, elaborately carved dome-shaped finial, which is topped with a small knob and is adorned with intricate foliate detail. Below the finial is a coordinating leaf design. A border separates the carved panel from the lower part of the box newel, which is ornamented with a simpler repetition of the same foliage. The carving is underlined, just above the base of the newel, by an exquisite egg-and-dart border. This splendid newel post is in excellent condition, has been stripped, and is ready to accept a finish. It is 56 ¾” tall and 7 ½” wide.
