Description
A remarkably elaborate carved limestone entry surround dating to the early 1930s, salvaged from the historic Windsor House—also known as the Castle Above the Clouds—on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. This Spanish-Revival mansion was built for George and Elizabeth Scholze, prominent Chattanooga industrialists who spared no expense in commissioning custom architectural stonework, ironwork, and tile for the residence.
This grand surround is an exceptional example of high-style 1930s craftsmanship, blending Baroque, Spanish Revival, and Churrigueresque influences. It features:
• Deeply carved scrolling acanthus and volutes framing the arch
• A dramatic crest shell crowning the top
• Twisted (Solomonic) columns with finely detailed capitals
• Carved plinth blocks with stylized botanical motifs
• Original hand-carved surface, beautifully weathered from decades in place
• Full dimensional surround, suitable for architectural reuse or display
Installed originally at the front entrance of the Windsor House tower, this surround complemented the home’s wrought-iron grillwork, Malibu/Mueller tile installations, and bespoke stone detailing throughout the property.
It is in good antique condition, and measures approx. 80″ wide by 128″ tall and projects 14″. This piece requires a custom shipping quote; please contact us if you have any questions.
